For this year’s theme we study museums and creating places of memory to promote sustainable progress through the conservation and development of existing architectural environments. The museum as a cultural construct has touched upon almost every aspect of human experience and knowledge. The adaptation and reuse of the existing built environment adds the dimension of melding and juxtaposing past and present. Can heritage sites like Tessin’s Mälsåker Baroque castle or the modernistic terminal and hangar buildings of Bromma Airport be transformed into a museum where history and memories are preserved? Can this be combined with new uses?
This course examines the hallmarks of creativity in people, teams, processes, and environments and strategies for innovating the museum, exploring how creativity and innovation can enhance heritage conservation practice. The course uses the Swedish context for study-work, but is informed by an examination of creativity and heritage conservation in different international contexts and innovative approaches to the historical museum. This year we will collaborate and interact with the University of Florida Historic Preservation Program and the school’s Preservation Institute Nantucket – America’s oldest field school for heritage conservation. A traveling seminar will go to New York City and Nantucket, Massachusetts – often viewed as a living museum.

Course content

Architectural Conservation is a one-year, advanced-level course that offers professionals the opportunity for advanced training in the field of architectural and heritage conservation. A comprehensive view of the complex issues concerning architectural conservation is discussed in historical, contemporary, and future contexts in Sweden and abroad.
The course explores policies and methods and philosophies and practice in heritage conservation. The history of conservation is examined with emphasis placed on key developments over time and major interventions at culturally, historically, and architecturally significant places and spaces. By building up theoretical knowledge together with documentation (traditional and 3D laser scanning), on-site studies, inventory, evaluation and analysis, we create a knowledge base for preservation, conservation, development and design in existing heritage milieus.
