The Medevi Brunn Spa

Medevi Brunn was founded on July 25, 1678, making it the oldest functioning health spa in the Nordic region. Until the early 1980s, Medevi Brunn operated as a spa with doctors, nurses, bath attendants, and traditions like drinking from the spring, church services, a spa orchestra in the park, and the famous Grötlunken procession. Today, Medevi Brunn is owned by the property company Medevi Brunn AB. The main owner is the Foundation for the Future of Medevi Brunn, which was established in 1996 by Professor Carl Axel Gemzell. The foundation was created to support the preservation of the cultural heritage of Medevi Brunn, including its 70 or so buildings and unique spring traditions.

Despite being a protected historic site under cultural heritage laws and designated as of national interest for cultural heritage preservation, the valuable cultural environment faces challenges due to high maintenance and operating costs, which are covered by hotel revenue and rental income during the short spa season when Medevi is open to the public each year. Therefore, it was very welcome when students in the Restoration Art course at the Royal Institute of Art chose to study Medevi Brunn. The study conducted in 2022 and 2023 has resulted in an exhibition and publication that discuss questions and answers about the future of Medevi Brunn.

On Urban Hjärne Day, Tuesday, July 25, 2023, the exhibition Medevi Brunn – Beauty, Sustainability, Function opened in Lindgården at Medevi Brunn. Lone-Pia Bach, Professor of Restoration Art at the Royal Institute of Art, inaugurated the exhibition and was the keynote speaker.
