2014/15: Out of the shadows – the creative conservation of utilitarian buildings

For this year’s theme we study the upgrading of utilitarian or outbuildings, explore strategies for the meeting of old and new, and capture the wholeness and meaning of historic architectural complexes. A principal building that has been preserved becomes an incomprehensible museum-like artefact if we fail to highlight the structures that surround it, provide its context, and were often originally the basis for the existence of the main building.
There are many striking examples of utilitarian buildings that have been upgraded: before the fire that destroyed it, Grafikens Hus, the graphics museum in Gripsholms Kungsladugård located in a restored barn and stables, revitalized the entire surrounding environment; an historic stables and exercise hall on Storgatan in Stockholm was preserved and transformed into remarkable prize-winning offices; Alnarpsgården, a large barn from 1869, attracted international interest when it was converted into a modern university building… Our project illuminates and develops such potentially significant buildings. Through restoration and development on different scales, the value of the whole cultural heritage milieu is increased.
Secondary buildings of high historical and architectural value are frequently neglected because of inadequate documentation and conservation. How can these buildings live up to modern demands, be conserved, restored and developed for new activities that will refine the cultural environment? How can new techniques interact with traditional building crafts? How can our wish to preserve cultural heritage values be united with a desire to integrate living contemporary functions into such structures?
Architectural Conservation
Architectural Conservation is a one-year course at advanced level which gives qualified, competence to professionals already working in the field of architectural conservation. A
comprehensive view of the complex issues concerning architectural conservation is discussed in historical, contemporary and future contexts in Sweden and abroad.
The course explores methods of evaluation and policies, strategies and practice in conservation. An analysis of the interventions and developments done over time is evaluated and discussed in the light of studies on the history of conservation, cultural historical evaluation and design studies. We visit and explore interesting and relevant buildings and milieus.
By building up theoretical knowledge together with documentation (traditional and 3D laser scanning), on-site studies, inventory, evaluation and analysis, we create a knowledge base for preservation, conservation, development and design in existing heritage milieus.
Architectural Conservation is an undertaking for architects, landscape architects, interior designers, engineers, conservation officers etc. who have a degree in architecture or the equivalent and at least one year’s relevant professional experience. The course is multidisciplinary to stimulate an active discussion between different professions.
The course is equivalent to 60 credits and is run in the form of seven professionalization blocks with theory, lectures, seminars, group work and workshops.
The course starts on 1 September 2014 and ends at the end of May 2015. The course periods are:
Autumn Term: weeks 36-37, 41-43, 49-50
Spring Term: weeks 4-5, 19-11, 15-16, 20-22.
Some work at weekends will be required during the course periods and also some homework between the periods. The disposition of the course enables participants to work between the timetabled blocks. Some shorter trips will be made within Sweden and a one-week trip abroad. The course will end with a joint report and exhibition.
Students are required to contribute to travel and accommodation expenses – 6 500 SEK/term, a total of 13 000 SEK. Those who are not able to take part in the study trips will be
given alternative tasks. Some parts of the course are in English. The 60 credits can be credited towards a PhD course.
The course will be led by Kerstin Barup, Professor of Architectural Conservation and architect, and Cecilia Sagrén, senior lecturer/architect. A number of international and Swedish guest teachers will take part. There is a scholarship that covers the entire cost of the course for one applicant from a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland.

MEJAN ARC is a forum for architectural and architectural conservation at advanced level. It highlights current problems in society where architecture, conservation, art and urban development are in focus and provide opportunities for engaging and research oriented studies in a one-year course. Mejan Arc offers two full time courses; Architecture and Architectural Conservation and two half-time courses; Art & Architecture and History and Theory of Architecture. The two full-time courses are organized with workshops and projects.
