Asier Mendizabal, Professor of Fine Arts specialising in sculpture and installation, and Johanna Gustafsson Fürst, Professor of Fine Arts specialising in sculptural processes, will discuss and lecture on Pensar con las manos (“Thinking with the hands”) together with Lisa Tan and Patricia Esquivias, as part of the Encuentros de Pamplona on 11 October at 11.30.
Their respective lectures – Pensar con las manos by Mendizabal and I Bite My Nails to Reach a Softer Surface to the World by Gustafsson Fürst – will be followed by a joint discussion and presentation of Manual, a publication based on reflections on sculpture, teaching, process and learning, anchored in their collaborative work with the 3D department at the Royal Institute of Art.
More information about the talk.
The question of the origin of thought and of language – and therefore the question of the origin of what it is to be human – is closely linked to the ability acquired by the hand to make precise gestures. Thought and gesture have always gone hand in hand, so to speak. They even share what is beyond them: just as the manual gesture leaves behind it the mark of its inexactness, the word leaves its trace in its enunciation – what is said will never be identical to what is thought.
Originally held in 1972, Los Encuentros de Pamplona is an important recurring event in literature, art and culture and has become a reference point for contemporary Spanish expression. This year’s guests include Nobel Prize winner Herta Müller, Béla Tarr, Sarah Ahmed, Boris Groys and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, among many others, continuing the tradition of bringing together international cultural personalities.
