Education

A Focus on Art

At the Royal Institute of Art, the artistic work is placed at the center of all teaching. Our work is characterized by a curious, experimental approach, where new insights and knowledge about art and architecture’s expressions, methods and contexts is put into focus. We create knowledge through the help of different pedagogical forms, in dialogue with the changes happening in art and culture.

By affiliating ourselves with acclaimed artists who represent different methods and perspectives, we facilitate an education which is both broad and in-depth. New perspectives and contexts are added, and exchanges of knowledge occur throughout the institute, enabling innovative art.

Programmes in Fine Art

Each student has an experienced artist as a tutor who supports the student in planning parts of their own study. Work in studios and workshops is combined with courses, group-critiques, lectures, field trips and exhibitions. The tutor is responsible for the student’s artistic development.

An international perspective permeates the education at the Royal Institute of Art. We invite international guest teachers, arrange international workshops and seminars, and encourage study-trips abroad as well as foreign-exchange opportunities to study abroad.

We do interdisciplinary work through exchanges and collaborations with related areas within culture, science, and the community. In order to prepare our program-students for the commencement of professional life, we offer course components in economics and exhibition production, among others. In addition, we arrange study-visits with professional organizations and public events centered on art.

Lifelong Learning

Our advanced-level courses for professional artists and architects offer the opportunity for lifelong learning and continued skills-development.

An important foundation for the experimentation and innovation which occurs within the education is that teachers and students who have managed to reach different lengths in their professional lives and artistic careers may work side by side, sharing knowledge with one another.

These courses are important for developing Swedish art and architecture, and for meeting contemporary challenges. We are constantly developing our education for professionals, so that they can meet today’s demands on competency.
