The visual artist Runo Lagomarsino, whose works have been shown at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and at the Venice Biennale, is a new doctoral student in the research area Artistic Living Environment at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (KKH).

Lagomarsino, who studied at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg, Malmö Art Academy and the Whitney Independent Study Programme in New York, is being welcomed to KKH as part of the Knowledge Foundation’s Jubilee Programme for doctoral students.

– We are very happy to welcome Runo to the Royal Institute of Art. He has for many years made a strong impression on the Swedish art scene with his stringent idea-based sculptural practice that explores the politics and poetics of space and place. He will be a great addition to our new research environment in Artistic Living Environment and KKH in general, says Axel Andersson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Senior Lecturer in Art History at KKH.

As part of his research studies at KKH, Runo Lagomarsino will develop the field of Artistic Living Environment, which includes exploring the potential of art generating new ways of using and thinking about public spaces – creating places where people not only pass through, but also meet, act and together create meaning. The work on Artistic Living Environment at KKH is located at Of Public Interest (OPI) Lab in Gröndal, led by Jonas Dahlberg, Professor of Public Art at KKH, that also offers an advanced level further education course.

The PhD position is being established with the aim of increasing the number of research graduates with specific expertise in collaboration. The research project is therefore conducted in collaboration with external partners from industry and/or other organisations.

In connection with KKH welcoming new doctoral students, a project made possible by the Knowledge Foundation, a collaboration has been established with Konstfack – University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, where the doctoral students will attend courses relating to artistic research. The studies lead to a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Artistic Practice in Visual, Applied and Spatial Arts.

Runo Lagomarsino will take up his duties on 1 May, 2025.
