Aex Valijani
My lover, whom I’m watching from afar,

Lately, I have been thinking about the ’90s hardcore and sXe (straight edge) scene of my hometown, Umeå. What drove a whole generation of kids to create forms-of-life in a small town in northern Sweden? This psychogeographical question is the starting point for the exhibition My lover, whom I’m watching from afar,.

The exhibition focuses on the spatiotemporal matrix of a video rental store pivotal to my childhood and its basement, where the shape of punk came into existence. At nights, the store redefined itself, more by ambience than function; distortion bleeding from kids making music, or—which is to say the same—a semiotic parasite eating the body of the machinic center of libidinal engineering and spitting it out anew.
