Split Seconds of Horizons
We are standing at a pier in a country where neither of us grew up. Possibly we are on a holiday. We look towards the horizon and notice that there are two parallel lines. One is the mirror image of the other, but neither he nor I can tell which is actual. At the same moment, the lines become diagonal, and so it continues until, for a split second, they are vertical. Then the sun disappears, and I asked him if he ever wanted children. He doesn’t make it on time to answer before the lines assume their diagonal shape again. Behind, the sun appears. Now, the horizon is horizontal, its reflection has been shadowed, only a line remains and I am standing on the fourth floor balcony of my childhood home. I wonder if the horizons I look at are one, as memory is one, or several, as stories are several.

Nicole Newsha Khadivi (b.1998) is a Swedish-Iranian artist and director. She is currently studying the last year of her master’s in Fine Arts at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and has also studied for a year at the Staedelschule in Frankfurt am Main. Nicole has previously exhibited at, among others, Marabouparken konsthall, Färgfabriken, Art Lab Gnesta, Accelerator, Goethe Institute, and also internationally in Germany and Ireland.
