The Royal Institute of Art (KKH) in Stockholm is a leading art college with a long artistic tradition dating back to 1735. Today, the institute is a government agency under the Ministry of Education and Research.
KKH is one of Sweden’s smallest higher education colleges, yet it offers the most extensive education in fine art and architecture on an artistic basis. Its teaching activities are led by prominent Swedish and international artists, architects, and theorists. Many alumni, as well as current students, are achieving success both nationally and internationally.
KKH offers a 5-year programme in fine art and a 2-year master programme in fine art. The college offers several advanced level further education courses that encompass both architecture and fine art. Its activities also include artistic research, development, and doctoral projects. The college has approximately 220 students and about 65 employees and is located on Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, among the island’s cluster of art and cultural institutions.
We are looking for a Professor in Fine Art with Specialisation in Sculpture and Installation. The position includes teaching, time for research and development, and participation in institution-wide activities.
Description of the subject area
The position is based within the 3D area of the degree programme at the Royal Institute of Art. This area spans multiple fields of knowledge, technology, and materials, encompassing workshops for sculpture, mechatronics, wood, metal, and glass, as well as a digital 3D lab. The 3D area is part of the new research environment CKD – Centre for Art and Digitality. This research environment aims to investigate and deepen the connections between sculptural processes, technological development, and societal issues.
Duties
The position focuses on sculpture and installation, along with their associated methods, discourses, and artistic contexts. As a professor, you hold subject responsibility and contribute deep knowledge and experience from the field, including its artistic practices and theories.
A central aspect of the role is conducting and developing your own artistic practice and contributing to the pedagogical and artistic development of the educational programme. You will actively participate in the implementation and development of the curriculum and teaching methods, as well as in the development of research environments and collaborations.
As a professor in Fine Art, you will teach and supervise students at all levels—from Bachelor and Masters to Doctoral level—and be responsible for planning and leading a supervision group of approximately 20 students. The students work across a range of artistic practices, and you are expected to guide and support them regardless of the medium they use.
The position includes teaching, time for research and development, and institution-wide duties in accordance with the local working hours agreement. Institution-wide duties entail active participation in the department’s shared work, such as contributing to the joint planning of degree programmes; participating in boards, committees, and working groups; and supporting the expansion of the department’s national and international networks.
Eligibility and assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for the position of professor are governed by the Higher Education Ordinance and the Royal Institute of Art’s regulations regarding the employment of teaching staff.
We are looking for a candidate who has demonstrated both artistic and pedagogical proficiency. The overall assessment also covers proficiency in cooperation and administration, as well as commitment and leadership skills.
The position requires an active and well-documented artistic practice within sculpture and installation, characterized by high quality and significant scope at an international level. Assessment is based on artistic proficiency and the relevance and grounding of the practice within the contemporary art field. Particular emphasis is placed on the ability to independently initiate, develop and lead artistic projects—including practice-based artistic research—as well as on an active national and international level. Experience in sharing and developing artistic practice through dialogue with diverse audiences and societal actors is also taken into account.
The position requires documented teaching experience at a higher education level within, or relevant to, the subject area of the position. The assessment is based on pedagogical experience and the ability to develop and lead education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Emphasis is placed on teaching, supervision, group critiques, and assessment, as well as the ability to create an inclusive, fair, and stimulating learning environment. Pedagogical experience must also include the ability to critically engage with and pedagogically apply knowledge within the fields of sculpture and installation, and to integrate current research and art theory into the educational content and pedagogy. A reflective pedagogical perspective and practice are also central.
You must also possess the personal qualities required to carry out the assignment and represent the university in a befitting manner. You play an important role in building a shared culture of openness and collaboration at the Royal Institute of Art, and in helping to create a positive work environment.
Criteria for assessing artistic proficiency
The position requires that the applicant:
- Has a well-documented artistic practice of high quality and significant scope at an international level.
- Can demonstrate a documented ability to independently initiate, plan, develop, execute, and lead high-quality artistic projects, including artistic practice-based research.
- Can demonstrate documented active engagement and strong national and international standing within their artistic field through continuous presence, collaboration, and participation in relevant artistic contexts and networks.
- Can demonstrate documented experience in presenting and sharing their artistic practice with diverse audiences and societal actors, and in various contexts.
- Can demonstrate documented artistic activity that makes a significant contribution to the development of the artistic field and is clearly relevant to the position in question.
Criteria for assessing pedagogical proficiency
The position requires that the applicant:
- Can demonstrate extensive experience in individual supervision, group critiques, and assessment.
- Can demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge pedagogically and adopt a critical approach to the field of sculpture and installation—including relevant research, theories, methods, and historical and contemporary artistic practices and contexts.
- Can demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, conduct, and lead high-quality education using various teaching methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to foster an inclusive teaching, research, and learning environment characterized by gender equality.
- Can demonstrate documented experience in pedagogical development work, as well as a reflective approach to their own pedagogical perspective and practice.
- Can demonstrate active and clear engagement in teaching by fostering student interests, participation, and motivation, as well as the ability to adapt instructions to students’ needs and circumstances and contribute to a positive learning environment.
Other assessment criteria
Requirements for the position:
- Training in higher education teaching and learning (equivalent to at least 7.5 ECTS-credits) or equivalent knowledge. If the applicant lacks such training, they must be willing to complete it during their employment.
- Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to foster engagement.
- Administrative ability to plan and organize work, assignments, and activities.
- Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English.
Meritorious criteria
- At least three years of documented experience teaching at the professorial level within, or relevant to, the subject area of the position.
Great importance is attached to the applicant’s personal qualities.
Selection process
An assessment of the applicants’ eligibility will be conducted after the application deadline. The selection process includes external experts’ assessments, interviews, trial lectures, studio visits and reference checks. Interviews are scheduled to take place in mid-January 2027.
About the position
This is a fixed-term position based on artistic qualifications, in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 10 of the Higher Education Ordinance (HF). The appointment is for five years, with the possibility of extension for a maximum of five additional years. The position is fulltime (100%) and based in Stockholm. Start date by agreement. Salary range: SEK 59,000–62,000 per month.
