Sonic Insurrections with EMBASSY (Tensta Konsthall)
Sonic Insurrections is a series of public gatherings that present sound and listening as sites of affect, memory, solidarity, pulse, rhythm and spirituality, delving into sound for its history, situatedness and processes to map out an ‘otherwise’.
The series is curated by Tawanda Appiah and Mmabatho Thobejane, who respond to Hurting and Healing – Let’s imagine a Different Heritage through the statement:
“From the standpoint of thinking of ‘an otherwise’ we affirm attempts to undo the definition of heritage as ‘denoting or relating to special architectural, historical or natural values that are preserved for the nation.’ With this definition, we come to notions of heritage as material, historical and as part of world-making and nation-building. However, nation-building is fraught with violence, war and anti-Blackness. If heritage is aligned with this context, what makes connection across borders possible? We do not have exact answers but we sense that music and sound perforate these demarcations allowing connectivity within Black communities and beyond.”
The first iteration of the series traversed the world of Black sonic traditions through the work of Nombuso Mathibela, a Johannesburg-based cultural worker and vinyl selector, and the curators of the series. The second iteration places the newly formed Stockholm-based DJ collective at the forefront and invites the audience to an immersive house music listening session.
Program:
18.00–18.30 Set #1
18.30–19.00 a conversation between the curators Tawanda Appiah and Mmabatho Thobejane and the EMBASSY collective. EMBASSY is a Stockholm based dj-collective brought together by a shared love and passion for house music

This event is the second in the Sonic Insurrection series and a previous event took place at Tensta konsthall March 26. The Audience took part in a presentation by the curators of the series, Tawanda Appiah and Mmabatho Thobejane, and an online performative talk and vinyl set by Nombuso Mathibela.

EMBASSY is the new constellation and collective brought together by a shared love and passion for house music. We’re 4 DJs who all have our own individual house flavour, but also have the same vision of what we want to provide the Stockholm club scene with: A club space where dancing and the music are the main thing. The collective consists of: Vanilla, Åke Falk, Denise (Beniwasta) Johnson & Sean Dadeo (Mamba).
