Oscar Lara at Tensta konsthall: Mining Life

The Royal Institute of Art’s doctoral candidate Oscar Lara is opening his exhibition Mining Life on October 6 at Tensta konsthall. The doors will open at 5 PM, and at 6 PM, Cecilia Widenheim will welcome the guests, followed by an introduction to the exhibition by the artist Oscar Lara and curator Lisa Rosendahl.

During his childhood, Oscar Lara spent school holidays in the Madre de Dios region of Peru’s Amazon jungle. Since 2018 he has been working on the Preventive Custody project, which involves women who by trafficking have been brought to the communities created around the gold mining industry in the area. The women’s stories have been developed into a play in collaboration with a dramaturg. At Tensta konsthall, the play has been transferred to the exhibition space through scenography and soundscapes. The exhibition also features the video work Searching for Power on the Collective Laugh, which continues the theme of the mining industry. In the film, a group of street comedians from Lima reenacts the comically complex relationship between the Peruvian state and bureaucracy, legal and illegal miners, and the corruption that characterizes the complicated system.

Mining Life brings together these stories into a stage-like city, rich in memories and environments, within the exhibition space at Tensta konsthall.
