My practice takes place in the wake of grief, in a convulsive need to remember and the simultaneous need for release. I am interested in loss and how it relates to domestic reproductive labour on the one hand and sequencing of memory on the other, a sequencing carried out by materials such as binders, papers and photographies.
To my mind the cleansing of a body, or a space, is an exercise in the privilege of forgetting. I am not interested in the cleaning of the human body per se, but rather in the material conditions that set oblivion in motion.
In the belly of a washing machine clothes cease to smell of yesterday’s effort, stop carrying the traces of traffic exhaust and sloppily eaten lunches. Yet every time textiles are washed free of stains and smells they release a little bit of their pigment into the water, gradually draining the textiles of color, like an old photograph fading or someone long dead, first rendered blue, then purple and bone white with time. But my body is alive, loving. It misses and it cleans. It collects, it sorts, it leaks.
