”Mermaids meets a group of men who frequent the Bosphorus, a perilous and political body of water where heavy ship traffic, strong currents, and water quality concerns have left it without a public swimming culture. The men call themselves the Sarayburnu Fatihleri (Conquerors of Sarayburnu), a tongue-in-cheek wink to Türkiye’s Ottoman past and a direct reference to their brave swim route from Üsküdar to Sarayburnu, Asia to Europe.

They commune year-round, building bonfires, hosting barbecues, breaking their fasts during Ramadan, feeding stray cats and crows, caring for each other, caring for, and worrying about the sea. The loosely formed group have organically taken over a random scattering of public armor stones, and through repeated use and acts of care, they have transmuted a nondescript space into a meaningful place.”
