Welcome to the 2025 Entity of Decolonization Annual Gathering. This year the curatorial team, made up of the participants of 2024/2025 Decolonizing Architecture postmaster course, invites participants to reflect on home as both a place and a practice—on the act of homing, returning, escaping, indulging, and belonging. Coming back to Borgo Ex in Carlentini, Sicily is not just a physical return but a continuation of collective memory, care, and transformation.
The violence against the Palestinian people continues to reach unprecedented scales, while fundamental freedoms in the West are under escalating attack and repression. As we continuously witness colonizers transforming spaces of home into spaces of violence and the expropriation of indigenous land, we pose the annual gathering as a platform to engage with these matters outside of repressive spaces.
This year, we center homing and return not only as restorative or intimate acts, but as acts of resistance—against the erasure of horizontal education and knowledge systems, and for the reclamation of space, knowledge, culture, and pleasure. Acknowledging the discomfort and alienation one might feel in connection to the term of home, we invite each other to interrogate colonial, gendered, racial and sexual narratives of this notion. By engaging with the site together – through workshops, interventions, gossips, walks and meals – we activate Borgo Ex as a living site for collective imagination, knowledge and home-making. What does home mean to you, and how is it shaped by personal, collective, or historical experiences? How can practices of love, friendship, and care create new forms of home beyond physical spaces? How do we situate these questions in a space that was never meant to be a home but a site for colonial-fascist ideologies and propaganda?
