Diving deeper, Sylvia Wynter Study Group II 2025/26 focuses on the advanced study of black feminist fugitivity and the forms and spatialities that are informed by the sociality, culture and creative practice emerging from within the African diaspora. The aim of this advanced course is to develop a deeper discussion, reflection and collective learning on advanced readings, with the purpose for participants to deepen and develop research questions and experiments that have been formulated in the continuation course from the previous year.
Theme and course content
Essays, by Jamaican thinker Sylvia Wynter: ‘Black Metamorphosis’ (unpublished manuscript), ‘Towards the Sociogenic Principle’ and ‘No Humans Involved’ — form the foundation for the study group and will be read and discussed alongside black feminist thinkers inspired by her work such as Denise Ferreira da Silva, Kathrine McKittrick amongst others. The group will collectively build a reader with other texts by Wynter (interviews, essays, plays, novels etc.)
Inspired by central themes and provocations emerging from Wynter’s work, the participants of thein-depth course will develop a collective research experiment. The experiment will be formulated and developed based on work and research questions emerging from the course the previous year, trough different articulations and reflections for further development through the year. The experiment is process-oriented and reflective, with emphasis on how to share and communicate the processes as means to navigate and develop process-oriented work collectively.
Course Structure
The course is one-year and full-time. The study group meets monthly for intensive sessions: reading, and discussion texts. Session of sharing work-in-progress and sharing feedback. Between course blocks, participants continue to develop work and research independently and collectively informed by previous sessions.
